Why People Keep Going

At the end of each month, I want to do a “post revisit.”

I have been blogging for over 12 years, and I often look back at my own posts for when I need to either be reminded of something from my past learning or when I need to relook at either the idea I shared or how I communicated the belief in the first place. I am a big believer that how ideas are shared is as important, if not more so, than the idea in the first place.

Great ideas often get lost in how they are delivered.

In the post below, originally shared in February 2020 (the world looked a lot different then!), I build on an image by Anna Vital on “Why People Give Up.”

I found this post as I was creating the introduction for the “Recalibrating Your Health and Wellness” course, and it reminded me of the importance of not only acknowledging problems we face but, more importantly, finding a way forward.

Otherwise, nothing ultimately gets solved.

This is something I am trying to instill in my kids and me in what we do in the face of adversity. Sometimes, things are really tough, but they continue to be so when we do not address them and find solutions to move forward.

It is a short post, but hopefully a reminder that our shift in our own thinking can lead to a change in our doing.

You might have seen the below picture below by Anna Vital on “Why People Give Up”:

Any single one of those reasons are things that can set us back. They have set me back often. I can take every idea listed above and think of a particular time that it temporarily caused me to give up, either personally or professionally.

So let’s take the ideas above and shift them to a different way of thinking.

The above image is about a “refocus,” but it doesn’t mean tough times will not happen again, or you won’t fall back into a defeatist mentality. Falling back is a reality. It is about not getting stuck.

I love this little shift in thinking from Marc and Angel:

“Being positive does not mean ignoring the negative. Being positive means overcoming the negative. There is a big difference between the two.”

There can always be a reason not to move forward. But, there can still be a reason to keep going.

I try to focus on this simple mantra when I struggle:

Go through it or grow through it.
