What we can learn from Lady Gaga…

The title is serious.

Watching the epic rise of Lady Gaga into pop culture has been absolutely fascinating.  Yes there are things that she has done that are questionable and would be considered inappropriate by many and there is definitely some shock value in her performances.

Although she is extremely talented and her songs are extremely catchy, you see that from many musicians.  This is not what separates her from the rest.

What really separates her from others is the way that she reaches out to her fans, connects, and empowers them.  Check out her tweet from today:

Now that may seem superficial, but if you check out her Twitter stream, you will see that she constantly connects and reaches out to her fans.  She’s using social media in a way that didn’t exist when I was a kid.  I couldn’t even imagine what it would have been like to have some of my favourite bands (Wham anybody?) reach out to me when I was young.

When you reach out, empower, and believe in those that you connect with, imagine the power that you give them.  Social media is making it easier (and even possible) to do that.

I remember distinctly when I felt one of my own teachers believed in me; it changed everything.

We can learn a lot from that approach.
