What Do You Stand For?

Early in my teaching career, I never really thought much about teaching, I just did it.  In the last couple of years though, I have had a major shift in my focus.  My shift to ALWAYS focusing on what is best for students has guided all of my decisions as an administrator and has made the tough calls a lot easier.

This quote from Rework stuck with me:

“When you don’t know what you believe, everything becomes an argument. Everything is debatable. But when you stand for something, decisions are obvious.”

It seemed before I really knew my goal as an educator, that I would have many tough nights after arguments or debates with others.  Educators are known for losing sleep.  With this clear understanding of what I believe, I sleep a lot better at night.  From assessment practices, engaging learning environments, technology integration, everything is still towards the same goal.  It is not that I ever go through a day without a disagreement, it is just easier to move forward when the goal is clear.

So in whatever career or position you are in, what do you stand for?
