On Friday, our grade 3/4 class at Forest Green School led our student assembly discussing their goals for the year. The class worked with every individual classroom in the school, talking with them, and figuring out their goals for the year, followed by the creation of an Animoto video for each class. (Thanks for the inspiration Pernille!).
It was amazing to watch the students talk in front of the entire school, run the technology, and even deal with the technical difficulties in a calm manner. As I have progressed in my career, I seem to have always been the one to either “run” the technology at these assemblies, or do the organization in many cases. It is much more powerful to our school and to those kids when they have this opportunity to not only be highlighted, but have PURPOSE in our school. Without their work, there is no assembly. We NEEDED them to do this.
There is oftentimes where there is someone in the background helping out with these students to ensure that they can take the lead, but is that not another component of leadership? Someone sitting in the background empowering others and passing off the baton.
If I am to be successful as a leader, I will help create a strong system that continues to be successful in my absence. It is amazing to see our teachers creating this same dynamic in their classroom.
