Starting on October 2nd, I am very pleased to announce that Parkland School Division, in conjunction with the Central Alberta Regional Consortium, will be holding totally open and free sessions on “Leadership 2.0“. This will explore what school leadership looks like in the context of today’s world and how innovative leaders are pushing their schools and organizations forward. The course will be based on the Alberta Principal Quality Standards but these standards are applicable to the success of a school leader anywhere in the world and usually align with most organizational standards.
Based on the idea of a MOOC, we encourage ANYONE to attend these free webinars. This is meant for current leaders, new leaders, aspiring leaders, or anyone interested in moving their organization forward. It is also open to those outside of education as well. There is no sale here, just an opportunity for people passionate about growing in their profession. Graciously, all speakers have agreed to do a session for free. Here is the information below:
Leadership 2.0 – A Collaborative Learning Opportunity for School Leaders
As administrators, learning is continuously evolving and we must be learning leaders within our organization. But what does leadership look like in schools today? If we are leading schools the same way that we were 20, 15, or even 10 years ago, will administrators still be relevant.
Using the Alberta Education framework for Principals, we are looking at developing leadership in schools that builds upon the fundamentals of good administration but in a continuously changing environment. Although we will be using the Alberta Education framework, these qualities are beneficial to leaders no matter what area of the world they are in. Because of this, we have asked school administrators from all over North America to share their insights on each strand and how they effectively meet this in the context of today’s learner.
With the “Leadership 2.0” open course, we will be pulling upon different experts to talk about what leadership looks like based on the Alberta Education Principal Quality Standard. The following seven dimensions will be focused on:
- Fostering Effective Relationships
- Embodying Visionary Leadership
- Leading a Learning Community
- Providing Instructional Leadership
- Developing and Facilitating Leadership
- Managing School Operations and Resources
- Understanding and Responding to the Larger Societal Context
To ensure that participants are coming out with a product, a first session on “digital portfolios” will be offered to help school leaders be able to reflect openly on their learning both during and after the sessions. The suggested platform for this portfolio will be a wordpress blog.

All participants are welcome to all sessions, but we encourage participants to attend all to broaden their learning. Each session will be between 60-90 minutes dependent upon conversation from the participants.
